IT’S MY FUCKING BIRTHDAY MONTH!!!!

Understanding My Journey: How Being an AuDHDer Affected My Ability to Drive

For many people, learning to drive is a rite of passage that opens up new opportunities and fosters independence. However, for me, it has been a challenging journey that reflects the complexities of being both autistic and being an ADHDer (AuDHD). Worse yet, when I became a parent and navigating external stressors became more pronounced.

As I approach my 41st birthday this November, I find myself reflecting on my experiences and how they are intertwined with my neurodivergent identity.

Growing up, I often struggled with executive functioning, a common challenge for AuDHDers. Tasks that seem straightforward to others, like organising my time and maintaining focus, often felt insurmountable. For years, I felt overwhelmed by the prospect of learning to drive.The combination of processing information quickly, managing sensory overload, and coping with anxiety made the idea of getting behind the wheel seem SUPER FUCKING daunting.

As I began to explore my neurodivergent identity more deeply, it became clear to me that my struggles with driving were not just personal failings but were directly linked to ADHD and autism. Understanding this connection was a revelation. I realised that my years of hesitance were rooted in my unique way of processing the world around me. The noise of the engine, the chaos of traffic, and the pressure of navigation all contributed to a sensory overload that left me feeling paralysed.

Recognising this has not only been empowering but has also spurred me to take action. I am currently researching autism-friendly driving instructors who understand the needs of neurodivergent individuals. I am determined to finally get my driver’s license, and I’m excited about the possibilities that come with it; freedom, exploration, and independence. BUT MOSTLY-NO MORE FUCKING ANNOYING UBER DRIVERS WHO TRY TO HIT ON ME ON THE WAY TO A SESSION!!!

In celebration of this journey and my upcoming birthday, I am welcoming tributes from my community. Each tribute, no matter the size, will likely go towards supporting my goal of obtaining my driver’s license.
